Bird keeping is a hobby that is worldwide, and expanding all the time. Many people find this as a great means of relaxation.
You may want to keep a single bird in a cage, or decide to set up an aviary in your garden

What ever you decide, you should get great satisfaction from it. I started with two zebra finches in a cage, and then progressed to an aviary in the garden.
I wanted the aviary to look colourful, so I have introduced various species over a period of time. These include Zebra finch, Love Bird, Kakariki, Canary, Parakeet, Chinese Quail and Cockatiel.

Obviously you will have your own preferences on what type of birds you want to keep, if you move into serious breeding and showing, you may decide to keep only one species

Initial expenditure will depend on the type of birds that will make up your collection to start with.Birds can be purchased from pet shops, garden centres, bird auctions and bird keepers You will find that sometimes you can buy from a bird keeper at a more reasonable price if he has surplus stock to sell. You can buy ready made aviaries, but as well as being expensive I think a lot of them can look like chicken runs. There is a lot of satisfaction from constructing your own custom design. A well-planned aviary that blends in will make an attractive feature in the garden.
